From the director of Creep, Severance and one of my favourute films of the last few years, Triangle, comes Black Death - set in the inherent godless outbreak of the bubonic plague in England. Over 100 million people succumbed to the plague throughout its many manifestations and returns until it finally left Europe in the 19th Century.

We begin with a young friar who checks his armpits for the plague and asks God for a sign. This comes in the form of Sean Bean as Ulric, envoy to the Bishop who has heard of a village that practices Necromancy and as a result has remained plague free. This blasphemous practicioner of the black arts needs to be brought to book so he needs a guide to take him to this village; friar Osmund dutifully volunteers to take Ulric and his group of middle- aged Middle Ages mercenaries (Christian envoys) to the village. Osmund has an ulterior motive though, he has fallen in love with a petite villager called Averill, whom he implores to flee from the village where the monastery is based before it is ravaged by the plague. He promises to meet her at a spot in the woods which conveniently happens to be in the direction Ulric needs to go.

Sadly, by the time they get there, the young Averill appears to have been kidnapped, or worse, killed. After a battle set-piece, these soldiers march onto the mysterious village, which does indeed appear disease free, with only word of the plague reaching them - not the plague itself. Enter the mysterious Langiva (Carice Van Houton) and her pandering left-hand man Hob (Tim 'Darling" McInnerny) - and the truth of the village is finally revealed, she is a witch with the ability to bring the dead back to life - and they keep the plague away by spilling the blood of God-fearing Christians...
